Night of Festivals SPECIAL EDITION provides a rich and spectacular centrepiece to the cultural celebrations for the Rugby World Cup in Leicester.
Music, theatre, dance, carnival, samba, live Festival art, visual arts installations, moving image, digital arts and participatory workshop activity will bring magic, enjoyment, cheap nfl jerseys fun and stimulation to the streets, FanZone and Stadium. Artists and artwork representing the five teams playing in Leicester – Argentina, Canada, Namibia, Romania and Tonga can all be seen and enjoyed in a vibrant programme of celebration offering activity and fun for the whole family. Don’t miss the special Night-Time Carnival procession (6-7pm Sat 3 October) with costumed stilt walkers, extraordinary lighted characters and inflatable costumes. The procession starts from New Walk Museum and leads to the FanZone in Victoria Park, culminating in a 15 minute finale presentation. The procession includes guest artists from Germany – Stelzen Arts and Oakleaf Creativity.
Humberstone Gate will host a live music stage with an exciting range of performance commencing 5pm on Friday 2nd October and continuing Saturday 3rd 11am – 6pm and Sunday 4th 11am – 5pm.
Highlights include – the opportunity to dance to the London Tango Orchestra (Friday 7pm); to enjoy the extraordinary sounds and vocals of Najma Akhtar and her band (Friday 8.30pm); and to move to the pulsating jazz and fusion rhythms of Kolektif Istanbul (Saturday 2.30pm)
Performances from the vibrant young artists of Kinetika Bloco, from local samba group Sambando and from the AAA4Success troupe from Leicester Caribbean Carnival add to the energy, excitement and colour of the Humberstone Gate area.
The Night of Festivals Performance Dome will be sited in Jubilee Square, offering a range of more intimate music, theatre, storytelling and spoken word performances on Saturday and Sunday from s 11am. Highlights include the children’s theatre show Destination Democracy on Saturday (1pm and 2.30pm), the ebullient ACD Arts presenting South African percussion and dance (Sunday 11am) and family storytelling from exciting presenter Wendy Shearer throughout the day (Sunday).
Connecting all the activity in Humberstone Gate, the Clock Tower area and Jubilee Square will be continuous Jam costumed carnival presented by Mandinga Arts, and the exceptional sounds of Europe’s leading Rio de Janeiro inspired samba company – Paraiso Samba. Watch out in particular for the special, giant King John puppet and procession, commissioned especially to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta. King John is accompanied by drummers and a in specially decorated 20 metre Magna Carta parchment and giant seal! Night of Festivals has been created to celebrate the values of freedom and democracy through artistic innovation, so a great connection to the Magna Carta year.
When you visit the FanZone over the period 3-11 October you’ll see the giant letters FREEDOM SQUARE sited in a special covered area. Local participants are invited to help us complete grafitti art on the letters as part of a special Night of Festivals installation programme. You’ll see other “plinths” with visual arts installations around the city centre.
The FanZone will also host a Night of Festivals silk painting project, creating a giant celebratory banner in Two recognition of the countries Artbeat represented in Leicester’s contribution to the Rugby World Cup.
Prior to each rugby match at the King Power Stadium (4, 6 and 11 October) the Night of Festivals carnival team will be presenting performances on the concourse outside the Stadium for one hour prior to each cheap mlb jerseys match – look out for the specially commissioned Tonga section and the sexy cows and bulls appearing prior to the Argentinian game!
